The Rich Young Man

Matthew 19:16-30

16. Now a man came up to Jesus and asked, "Teacher, what good thing must I do to get eternal life?"

17. "Why do you ask me about what is good?" Jesus replied. "There is only One who is good. If you want to enter life, obey the commandments."

18. "Which ones?" the man inquired.
Jesus replied, " 'Do not murder, do not commit adultery, do not steal, do not give false testimony,

19. honor your father and mother,' [d] and 'love your neighbor as yourself.' [e]"

20. "All these I have kept," the young man said. "What do I still lack?"

21. Jesus answered, "If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me."

22. When the young man heard this, he went away sad, because he had great wealth.

23. Then Jesus said to his disciples, "I tell you the truth, it is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven.

24. Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God."

25. When the disciples heard this, they were greatly astonished and asked, "Who then can be saved?"

26. Jesus looked at them and said, "With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible."

27. Peter answered him, "We have left everything to follow you! What then will there be for us?"

28. Jesus said to them, "I tell you the truth, at the renewal of all things, when the Son of Man sits on his glorious throne, you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.

29. And everyone who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother [f] or children or fields for my sake will receive a hundred times as much and will inherit eternal life.

30. But many who are first will be last, and many who are last will be first.

I just taught a Sunday school lesson on this verry passage! The message in this is more than many think, Most think that just the fact that he was very rich was the reason he could not enter hevan, or follow Christ! This is not what Christ was saying at all! This young man loved his possessions more than he did God. This is what is a problem with many today, they love their possession and things more than they do the Master who enabled them to have these "Things"!! And the other part of the problem is that many are convenced that just by doing good things, and trying to be a good person will assure them a place in heaven.
You can't EARN your way into heaven, nore can you BUY your way in! And just believing that God and Christ exist, and that Hevan and Hell exist will not get you into heaven! Even Satin KNOWS THAT GOD IS REAL,AND CHRIST IS REAL, AND THAT THERE IS A HEAVEN AND HELL!!But we all know what is to be his fate.
It is only by THE GRACE OF GOD through FAITH (in his SON as Master of our lives)not of Works, or deeds lest we should boast!
Remember that one of the ten commandments was " I the Lord Your God am A Jelous(sp?)God! And You shall have NO OTHER gods other than me!!!!
You are to love the Lord Your God with ALL your heart, and with ALL your mind, and All your soul.

Thomas,

I agree with you completely!
I feel the exact same way about this message and about not being able to just EARN your way into heaven. Like you said, even SATAN himself knows and believes in GOD,Jesus and the Holy spirit. Satan even knows the Bible better than we do! Yet he is the father of all lies!

We have to believe the word of God is true first, then we have to Obey what it says! That is how we Obey God, is by obeying His Word!

Thank You so much for what you wrote here. I am grateful for you posting that here!

I am grateful for all of your thoughts, opinions, and anything else you have to say.

God Bless You!
